The 32-year-old midfield maestro joins former Ebbsfleet United team-mates Rakish Bingham and Dominic Poleon at the Saunders Transport Community Stadium for the 2025/26 and 2026/27 seasons.

Billy is a product of Chelsea Academy who signed his first professional contract in 2010, before featuring in Carlo Ancelotti’s First Team squad for the Champions League later that year.

From 2013 onwards, he had respective loan spells at Colchester Town, Yeovil Town and then Royal Antwerp under former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

Clifford left Chelsea in August 2014 and moved on to Walsall in 2014/15, Boreham Wood in 2015/16 and then Crawley Town for two seasons from July 2016.

A very brief stint back at National League Boreham Wood was next in August 2018, preceding a move to National League South Hemel Hempstead Town.

Billy built up a relationship with boss Dean Brennan – who he followed across to Billericay Town at the end of the year. He spent the remainder of the 2018/19 campaign on loan at his local side Slough Town.

A fresh new start saw him sign for Wealdstone in July 2019, where he went on to score six goals from 31 appearances and help guide The Stones to The National League South title. The Ruislip outfit hit 70 points from 33 games and Clifford was voted into the 2019/20 Team of the Season.

He made the switch to Havant & Waterloville in August 2020, where he went on to make 70 appearances in two and a half seasons at Westleigh Park.

Ebbsfleet United came calling for his signature in January 2023 – and he partnered up with Farnborough new boys Rakish Bingham and Dominic Poleon to power their way to The National League South title on 103 points.

Billy turned out 47 times in Kent, before reuniting with Dean Brennan at Barnet in June 2024.

After overcoming an injury at the start of last season, he made 21 appearances to help The Bees seal a return back to EFL League Two and achieve a Club record points total.

Barnet hit 102 points last season, scoring 97 goals along the way as Clifford collected yet another winners’ medal last May.

Thrilled with his latest signing, Boro boss Spencer Day said: “Billy Clifford is a real headline signing.

“Won the Division a number of times and helped Barnet get into the Football League.

“Again, we’ve been really lucky getting somebody who wants to push on as a part-time footballer now.

Tried to get Billy two years ago when he considered going part-time, so delighted to get it done this time.

“Real pedigree and gives us so much strength through midfield.”

“Really, really excited to get him and it’s a fantastic acquisition again on a two-year deal moving forward.”

Clifford has been allocated shirt number 4.
